    Birmingham Conference 2015 (http://www.voicetheunion.org.uk/birmingham2015)

    From Twitter:

Umbrella in the welcome pack? Must be the @Voicetheunion conference! #verybritish

Flag you like the brolly. May provide welcome shade from the sun today

Excited to be at @Voicetheunion Conference in Birmingham today. Come and pick up some free resources at our stall!

Really enjoying @_respectme_ keynote speech at @Voicetheunion conference. Is bullying behaviour always persistent? Is it always intentional?

    @SchoolsWeek (Laura McInerney)

First up is Brian Donnelly from @_respectme_ talking about their approaches to anti-bullying

Children “don’t have to be friends” with each other but they have to respect each other. “Bullying will thrive when there’s no respect”

“Who decides if bullying is persistent? The child affected or the adult following a definition of persistence in guidelines? Not helpful”

Brian – in Scotland 29/32 authorities have removed the words “persistent”+ “intent” from policies as it’s not helpful in dealing with bullying

“We don’t label as ‘bully’ and ‘victim’. What do we call the person who is [bully] today and is the victim tomorrow?”

Sandra Taylor from @teachersupport breaks the news that it will change its name to Education Support Network @Voicetheunion conference

“Too much, too soon, too formal” – a big issue in education today and the debate in the room @Voicetheunion this afternoon

Message coming through that we need to get better at communicating – as a society and a workforce.

Audience member – “if we have a fear of league tables over what’s best for each child then we are in the wrong job”

Tracey Storey from Broaden HR says it is a “big challenge” to get young people to want a career in nurseries or schools.

And that we need to value the profession more and there needs to be a change in the perception of teachers.

Tracey says early years v worried about 30 hours free childcare-“that’s what Sure Start centres were for and most of them have been closed”

Very good debate about workload, stress & education system

Fun end to conference with Knitter’s Jig leading the dancing
