On 5 October 2016, General Secretary Deborah Lawson and I met Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills John Swinney (pictured).
It was a constructive meeting, and a welcome opportunity to discuss our Scottish members’ concerns, such as the impact of budget cuts on school support staff numbers.
We also discussed the Education Governance Review – in particular our concerns about the potential for already overloaded headteachers and school staff to be further swamped by their workloads.
We took the opportunity to make clear the difficulties which have been experienced in other parts of the UK by increased authority being devolved to headteachers – which remain pertinent even if local authorities are to remain on the education scene – to ensure similar pitfalls are avoided in Scotland.
