Voice Scotland has given a cautious welcome to the Scottish Government’s announcement of funding to train an extra 371 teachers in 2017/18.
However, we hope that we do not see a return to the early 2000s, when we had unacceptable teacher unemployment in Scotland because councils would not (or chose not to) employ teachers on permanent contracts after their probation.
It is also essential that there are appropriate resources in place to support newly qualified teachers (NQTs) as they enter the workplace
As a result of reduced resources in schools, probationer support is being reduced. The danger is that if probationers enter an unsupported environment after their studies, many may decide early on not to stick with teaching as a career.
