The ‘ACT for Youth: RUN HIDE TELL’ campaign

The Action Counters Terrorism (ACT) for Youth campaign
By Voice General Secretary Deborah Lawson

I want to bring to your attention a new campaign, ‘ACT for Youth’, which provides guidance for 11-16 year olds on how to react in a gun or knife terror attack.  While such incidents remain rare, it is important for young people to be prepared and know how to protect themselves.  The first phase of the campaign was launched by counter terrorism police in September.

The core advice – RUN to safety, HIDE if you can’t, and TELL the police when you’re safe – has been developed for delivery in schools in partnership with the PSHE Association, using a new animated film supported by lesson plans and teacher guidance notes. The material is available to teachers nationally from 14 November 2017.

Although we support the principle of the campaign, we welcome feedback on:

  • the materials;
  • any workload, curriculum or training implications; or
  • other concerns you may have about the campaign.

Your views are important – not only do they help inform Voice policy, they enable us to represent your views, using real examples, to officials and ministers in all the home nations.
