    I think it is shameful that Mr. Gove intends to go against all the evidence knowing it is NOT accepted by all those who work in education and, which has been proved time and again, it is they who are the experts. The financial burden we can well do without. The money would be better spent elsewhere in education if there is that much available. Mr Gove is in the wrong job, as I have maintained before, he doesn’t understand education.

    Over a period of thirty years I taught a special class for non-readers aged 7 or 8 to 11. In every case where they achieved a Reading Age of 8, they could first spell over 300 words. To do this they started with ‘a’ and ‘I’, then at least 20 of the usual 25 words of two letters, followed by around fity of those with three letters, before attempting the everyday instances of consonantal blends, vowel digraphs and occasional irregular vowel sounds inherent in words of four letters. This latter stage was the watershed, or tipping point in their learning progression. Since retiring I have asked five schools to apply a graduated spelling test (125 words subdivided into five sets of 25)to each school year, with words of two letters for Year 2, three letters for YEAR 3, and so on up to six letters for Year 6. In each case, around 80% of pupils scored 80% or more, leaving the failing minority scoring under 20 out of 25. Why has this simple result not been noticed or commented on ?

    Extract from "Funny phonics" article in the January edition of members' journal, "Your Voice":

    "This anonymous poem highlights some of the absurdities of English spelling and underlines some of the difficulties of relying solely on a phonics approach to the teaching of reading. Why, then,is the Government insisting that systematic synthetic phonics is the only credible methodology for teaching children to read?

    I take it you already know
    Of tough and bough and cough and dough?
    Others may stumble, but not you,
    On hiccough, thorough, lough and through?
    Well done! And now you wish, perhaps,
    To learn of less familiar traps?
    Beware of heard, a dreadful word
    That looks like beard and sounds like bird,

    For goodness' sake don't call it deed!
    Watch out for meat and great and threat
    (They rhyme with suite and straight and debt).
    A moth is not a moth in mother,
