I was under the impression when we changed from from O Levels/CSE system that the new GCSE’s exam papers were to be graduated to cover all abilities. It was described as one new paper that would carry questions suitable for the less academic through to the most academic so allowing each student to answer as much as they could and receive a grade according to their ability.
I thought at that time it would be quite effective. As things stand at the moment I would not be against re introducing an O level paper to give the more able students something more demanding to aim for. If teachers do not set their sights high many would/could not do it on their own. It would also be better preparation for A levels and ultimately, for those who wish, university.
